To all my coffee lovers out there, don't worry...we can have our coffee and camp too! Honestly, this was one of the first things I thought about when first planning our camping trip. How can I survive without my morning coffee? Oh, there are ways...and plenty of them!
1. Instant Coffee
Ideal use - backpacking, bike packing, wanting to save space, reduce weight
Method - The general idea of instant coffee is to put the coffee grounds into a cup and add boiling water. But be sure to check the instructions on your exact instant coffee.
2. Coffee in a bag
Ideal use - backpacking, bikepacking, saving space, reducing weight
Method - Like a tea bag but with coffee instead. Lightweight, self-contained, and no messy grounds to clean up.
3. Single Serve Pour-overs
Ideal use - backpacking, bikepacking, save space, reduce weight
Method - consist of a paper frame and pouch that is filled with coffee grounds. The frame expands and is placed over your cup. Then you pour boiling water through the pouch like pour over. Remove and enjoy.
4. Pour-over stand
Ideal use - serious coffee drinks, groups of 2-4
Method - Using a paper or a cloth filter, fill with coffee grounds and place over your cup. Heat your water until nearly boiling and slowly pour into the filter in a circular motion. A kettle that can pour a smooth, steady stream of water without dribbling is critical for pour-overs.
5. French press
Ideal use - car campers, vans, RVs, anyone who enjoys a simple brew method that produces rich coffee.
Method - dump coarse coffee grounds into the bottom, drizzle a little bit of hot water to degas, fill the container with hot water, stir, wait, and depress the plunger.
6. Percolator
Ideal use - car camping, vans, RVs, good for small and large groups
Method - fill the kettle with water, place a paper or metal filter in the basket, fill with coffee grounds, and boil until ready. Most percolators come with a glass or plastic viewing bubble at the top so you can see when the coffee is the correct color.
7. Portable espresso
Ideal use - car camping, vans, RVs.
Method - while exact instructions vary, the general idea is that fine coffee grounds are packed into one compartment and hot water is added to another compartment.
BOTTOM LINE
Choose the best method for you and your camping type. If you're backpacking, it may not be a good idea to bring a huge french press but if you're RVing it's definitely doable. Do you and keep on enjoying your coffee, lovers!
